Vantage Point

A nuanced Old Fashioned riff from Death & Co New York’s Javelle Taft that deftly balances floral/spice and boozy/light 🥃
The blended Japanese whisky has notes of spice and subtle honey that work nicely with the caramelized sugar and subtle fruit notes in the American brandy and the floral and citrus notes in the Italian aperitif. The addition of a splash of smoky Islay malt brings notes of black pepper and the orange bitters bring citrus and cardamom notes
1.5 oz Japanese Blended Whisky (Suntory Toki works well)
.5 oz American Brandy (Bertoux, Argonaut, Osocalis, etc; can sub VSOP cognac)
2 tsp Italian Rosolio (Italicus is one with widest distribution; an Italian aperitif with notes of rose petals, bergamot and citron peel, other botanicals)
1 tsp Islay Scotch (Caol Ila 12, Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte 10, etc)
1/2 tsp Simple Syrup (equal parts granulated sugar and water; stir until dissolved)
1 dash Orange Bitters (I like equal parts of the cardamom-forward Regan’s Orange and juicier Angostura Orange)
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled double rocks glass with a large ice cube; garnish with the essential oils from an orange twist (discarding the twist after expressing)
