Night Tripper

A flavorful bittersweet Old Fashioned riff from NOLA drink wiz Chris Hannah for Jewel of the South with comforting baking spice notes 🥃
The cinnamon red hots, caramel, and vanilla notes in the bourbon work nicely with the cola and bittersweet orange peel notes in the Averna and the saffron/honey/subtle anise notes of the Strega. The Peychaud’s bitters bring additional notes of floral/anise and cherry notes (and a pleasing reddish hue). Best enjoyed while listening to music from the drink’s namesake (Dr. John)
1.75 oz Bourbon (Bottled in Bond options like McKenna or EH Taylor have more concentrated flavor, but regular proof works too)
.75 oz Averna (Sicilian amaro with mild bittersweetness and rounded cola/citrus peel notes)
.5 oz Strega (Italian liqueur with notes of honey, saffron, anise)
2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters (I like to split between Peychaud’s and Bitter Truth Creole Bitters, but either works nicely)
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled double rocks glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange twist
