How Do I Compare

A fall-flavored Old-Fashioned/Scaffa riff from Sother Teague of NYC’s excellent Amor y Amargo with abundant apple and orange flavors 🍎 🍊
The baking spice, caramel, and vanilla notes in the bourbon and apple/spice notes in the Apple Brandy and bitters push the apple notes front and center, while the splash of orange liqueur and oils from the orange twist add some juicy citrus notes without any acidity. The honey and saffron notes in the Benedictine boost those flavors even more. Sother Teague serves this as a scaffa (room temperature cocktail, but I prefer the gradual dilution achieved by pouring over a large rock; though no stirring first) .75 oz Bourbon (Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, etc)
.75 oz Apple Brandy (an aged version like Clear Creek or St George gives softer, more robust apple flavor than Laird’s Bonded)
.5 oz Benedictine (Brandy-based liqueur with many herbs and spices; honey and saffron notes are prominent)
.25 oz Orange Liqueur (want one with neutral spirit base like Cointreau or Combier vs cognac-based Grand Marnier or the drier Pierre Ferrand)
2 dashes Barkeep Apple Bitters
Add directly to double rocks glass and stir briefly before adding a large ice cube. Garnish with oils from an orange twist (discard the twist)
