Goin’ Out West

A flavor-packed Old Fashioned variation from Joe Broglio of Chicago’s excellent Billy Sunday that brings loads of baking spice and a hint of campfire smoke The rye whiskey brings plenty of black pepper and baking spice notes that work well with the orange peel and coffee accents in the mildly bittersweet Averna and the allspice and clove notes in the Angostura. The Mezcal contributes a smoke note (as well as a touch of fruit) that helps evoke time around an open hearth or campfire. Relatively simple in execution, but some complex, dialed-in flavors in this evening sipper 1 oz Rye Whiskey (Bonded option like Rittenhouse is the best option here) .5 oz Mezcal (Espadin variety) .5 oz Averna (Italian Amaro with very mild bitterness; notes of coffee, orange peel, cola) .25 oz Simple Syrup (1:1 granulated sugar and water, stirred until sugar is fully dissolved) 2 dashes Angostura Bitters Stir with ice and strain into a chilled double rocks glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange twist
