Cruel Summer

A refreshingly bittersweet Sour/Daiquiri riff with notes of strawberries, rhubarb, and plum 🍓☀️🍹 The blend of star-anise forward unaged aquavit and Old Tom gin creates a base with spice notes that complement the berry and citrus notes from the strawberries and lemon. The sweet/tart notes of the plum and splash of smoked rhubarb amaro add layers of bittersweet flavor while the fruity spice of the pink peppercorn syrup helps round the edges. The rhubarb and ume bitters help highlight the bittersweet notes and leave you craving another sip Muddle 2-3 smaller fresh strawberries and 2 slices of plum (Santa Rosa plums are a bit sweeter and have great flavor if you can find them at the market) in .5 oz Pink Peppercorn syrup (1/2 C each granulated sugar and water on medium-low heat until sugar has dissolved; pull off heat and add 1/2 Tsp pink peppercorns and steep 30 minutes before straining) Add: 1.5 oz Unaged Aquavit (the star anise notes in Krogstad are really good with the strawberry here) .5 oz Old Tom Gin (older, less Juniper-forward style than London Dry; Hayman’s or Scofflaw are nice here) .75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice .25 oz Smoked Rhubarb Amaro (Amaro Sfumato; Zucca is a decent sub) .25 oz Strawberry Liqueur (Giffard) 1 dash Rhubarb Bitters (Crude (Fee Brothers in a pinch)) 1 dash Miracle Mile Ume Bitters Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a fan of sliced plum
