Black Dahlia

Smoky, yet rich variation on a Manhattan from Leo Robitschek at NoMad Bar in NYC
The smoke from the mezcal intermingles with the deep raisin flavor from the sherry while the Zwack provides a bitter counterpoint and the Grand Marnier and bit of lemon provide a juicier note. An excellent after-dinner drink
1 oz Mezcal
.75 oz Lustau East India Solera Sherry*
.5 oz Grand Marnier (orange liqueur with a cognac base)
.5 oz Zwack Unicum (Hungarian Amaro with orange peel and spice notes followed by a bitter finish)
1 Barspoon (approx 1/2 to 3/4 tsp) Fresh Lemon Juice
2 dashes Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas' Own Decanter Bitters*
Stir with ice, strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a grapefruit twist *The original recipe calls for the harder to find (and intensely raisin sweet) Moscatel Sherry. In the absence of having this bottle in the cellar, I find that an Oloroso sherry or Lustau's East India style of sherry with a few dashes of the raisin and clove heavy Jerry Thomas Bitters is a good hack. If you have moscatel, sub for the East India and omit bitters
